As an early American reenactor I have studied the Colonial period of our fine country. I have seen what made up the attitudes and motivations of those hard scrabble individuals who put it all on the line to come, then to stay in this new land. Fact is there were very few, if any, liberals cutting through the back country building homesteads, clearing fields and planting crops. They were firm believers in accountability, answering for your decisions, and providing for yourself and all those under your care. There were no government programs, handouts and, no free rides, short or long term. This country was settled by individuals who knew how to work, how to take a stand, and how to fight. Freedom, religious, and personal was key to their existence. That is the type of people who started all this. What type are you?
